LIFE Fit for REACH

In the predecessor project “Baltic pilot cases on reduction of emissions by substitution of hazardous chemicals and resource efficiency” (LIFE Fit for REACH), between 2015 and 2020 six partner companies producing mixtures or articles each substituted at least one hazardous substance and two of them also increased their resource efficiency in one production process. In addition, approximately 80 mainly SME in different sectors either substituted hazardous substances with less hazardous alternatives or improved their overall CRM in the company. During the project, many information events, trainings and workshops were conducted. Brochures and leaflets providing guidance on chemicals risk management in companies were published. National stakeholders were involved via round tables. The international audience was invited for discussions at international seminars.

Overall, the LIFE Fit for REACH project caused a significant decrease of the uses and emissions of hazardous substances due to substitution as well as an increased awareness and understanding of chemicals issues in the companies. However, we identified several needs for (further) improving chemicals risk management in companies, which we want to address in the LIFE Fit for REACH-2.

LIFE Fit for REACH:

  1. Implemented a set of complex measures in six companies which substituted some of the identified hazardous substances or increased the efficiency of the resource use and lead to reduction of emissions of these substances. More you can find in the section Case stories or read FitforREACH in Brief – Substitution and resource efficiency cases
  2. Implemented “low effort – low costs” measures to substitute the target hazardous substances or to introduce good chemicals management practices in additional SMEs. More you can find in the section Case stories or read FitforREACH in Brief – Substitution and resource efficiency cases
  3. Developed the online tools to assist in proper management of chemicals in companies.
  4. Disseminated information about implementation of REACH regulation and its optimum implementation to all interested SMEs in Baltic States and contributed to greening of the industry with regards to better chemicals management.
